Mahoney Creek
Mahoney Creek Watershed Map
The City has hired HR Green and Applied Ecological Services (AES) to assist the City in preparing a conceptual watershed plan for the entire Mahoney Creek watershed. The kickoff meeting was on March 4, 2020 followed by the first walk through of the creek. Additional walk throughs will be occurring through March and April to collect information on the creek and be used in the final report.

Watershed Based Study 2021
The City of Batavia has hired HR Green and Resource Environmental Solutions (RES), formerly Applied Ecological Services (AES) to continue the watershed study from 2020. The difference is the previous plan was more of a concept plan, the Watershed Based plan is more in depth and after completion will allow more opportunities for grant funding. The kickoff meeting was June 8, 2021. Since the kickoff meeting, data gathering, watershed BMP inventory, plan summary, pollutant load modeling, and selection of BMP's has taken place. The next steps between meeting 1 and 2 will be preparing programmatic and site specific action plans. Between meetings 2 and 3 a water quality monitoring plan and education and outreach plan will be created along with an implementation schedule and a final report.

Streambank Restoration Status
Project Description & Location
Mahoney Creek is an intermittent stream on the east side of the City that is a tributary of the Fox River and has a tributary as well. The creek begins just southeast of the intersection of Kirk Road and Fabyan Parkway, the tributary also starts on the east side of Kirk and flows west to Raddant and Cleveland where it joins the creek and flows generally southwest to its confluence with the Fox River just south of downtown Batavia. The purpose of this project is to restore and provide shore stabilization for Mahoney Creek. The creek currently has 9 crossings, 1 is unincorporated and there is the removal of the Shannahan Grove Park culvert structure. The tributary has 4 crossings plus the overflow structure in Michael Wild Park. All locations need at least one of the following: brush clearing, grading, slope stabilization, and culvert repair/replacement. Grant money is being sought to help reduce the cost of the improvements.
These improvements are currently being planned over the course of 4 to 5 years depending on budget and scheduling and subject to change.
Project Schedule
The current project schedule is as follows: Note: Years were modified after bidding Cleveland and Raddant. Modified dates are bold and not reflected in the CIP Budget Sheet). Some years have been modified due to funding at this time. ? denotes a tentative schedule since funding has not been secured for all projects at this time.

Mahoney Creek Stream-Bank Stabilization
Where the Mahoney Creek Tributary and mainline creek converge at Cleveland and Raddant streambank stabilization and dredging was completed in 2014 and ecological maintenance was completed in 2015. The City has this location included in its annual maintenance contract for all natural areas.
Woodland Hills Park (Partnered with Batavia Park District)
Mahoney Creek Tributary at Woodland Hills Park Plans (PDF)
Background
Mahoney Creek Tributary runs along the northern ROW of Wintergreen at the southern edge of Woodland Hills Park. Water has a natural tendency to meander over time and in this case, it has started to approach public infrastructure, i.e. the street. This project will reestablish and grade the creek and put stabilization methods in on the toes of the slopes (stones) and check dams every seventy-five feet to help slow down the water and dissipate the energy.
Current Status August 29, 2019
Grading started at Woodland Hills Park the week of 8/12 and includes grading, installing a settling basin, plants and hardscape to prevent erosion and settling along the creekbanks. All work shall be completed by August 30.
Status July 11, 2019
The contractor, C & H Excavating, expects to start removing trees and site clearing the week of July 15th. The restoration work will be completed by August 30th. Grading and restoration work will start prior to the Wilson Street project once tree removal and site clearing has been completed.
Status April 25, 2019
A preconstruction meeting was held April 23rd with the contractor, C & H Excavating, and they anticipate work starting by the end of May or early June, weather pending, and will be completed by August 30th. This location will be constructed prior to Wilson Street.
Wilson Street
Mahoney Creek at Wilson Street Plans (PDF)
Background
Mahoney Creek comes from the northeast and heads southwest next to Heritage Woods. This portion of the creek has many hard turns, i.e. 90 degrees. Water, when traveling at full velocity, does not turn well and when it is forced to make sharp turns starts eroding property. This is the case at this particular location of Mahoney Creek. This project will stabilize a few hard 90 degree turns with stone before the water removes too much soil that will not be allowed to be replaced in the future and starts impeding public infrastructure.
Current Status August 29, 2019
All work has been completed at Wilson Street
