Area Environmental Groups & Organizations
Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners provide educational seminars and manages the Wildflower Sanctuary along the Riverwalk in Batavia. An environmental focus of the group is working with native plants and encouraging gardeners to use them creatively in their landscape. Their annual plant sale includes a variety of native plants.
The club meets the third Tuesday of each month from September through June at 7 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library. Invited speakers offer informational seminars about all types of gardening at meetings. Guests are always welcome. For more information check out their Facebook page.
The mission of the Foundation is to preserve open space and natural lands, protect rivers and watersheds, and promote stewardship of our environment. Although the Foundation works in the larger area of DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will Counties, they have a program that can make a difference right here in Batavia. The Conservation at Home program encourages and recognizes property owners that protect and/or create yards that are environmentally friendly and conserve water. This includes planting native vegetation, trees and shrubs, creating butterfly and rain gardens, and removing exotic species of plants right in your own backyard flowerbeds. Loss of open space, wildlife habitat and dirty rainwater runoff are the leading causes of environmental degradation in our developed areas. If we can replace some of this lost habitat in our yards, then we can reduce some of the negative impacts of development and have cleaner water in our neighborhoods. Check out their Facebook Page
The mission of Fermilab Natural Areas is to restore, manage, and conserve Fermilab's natural areas in support of our science mission. Fermilab Natural Areas also wishes to encourage its neighbors to experience and enjoy Fermilab's natural beauty as well. There are volunteer opportunities to work on the prairie.
Forest Preserve District of Kane County
Forest Preserve District has worked to preserve and restore Kane County's natural areas, improve wildlife habitat, and enhance the quality of life for all Kane County residents. Visit the forest preserves and enjoy a quiet walk, embark on a camping weekend, picnic with friends and family, learn about nature, bird watch, fish, golf, ride, volunteer, or simply experience the wonder of our more than 23,000 acres of woodlands, wetlands and prairies.
Fox Valley Sustainability Network
The Fox Valley Sustainability Network works on environmental, economic and quality of life issues and projects within the Valley. The Network marries a strong communications infrastructure with a series of action-oriented events to connect the dots to remake our communities and create an environmentally sustainable region. Several opportunities exist to participate with this organization from assisting in a Fox Rescue cleanup, participating in a Watershed Monitoring Network where you'll learn how to monitor water quality, or lending a hand at during a habitat improvement project. Kane DuPage Soil & Water Conservation District
The Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Kane & DuPage Counties exists to provide educational opportunities and resources for individuals and groups on how to best manage our natural resources.
Our local chapter of the national Sierra club is The Valley of the Fox Sierra Club. They draw membership from the Fox River Valley including, but not limited to Aurora, North Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, South Elgin and Elgin. Their mission is to explore, enjoy and protect the natural areas of the Fox River Valley and to practice and promote the responsible use of earth's ecosystems and resources. They typically meet the first Monday of the month.
The mission of Wild Ones is to promote native plants, natural landscapes, and environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities. Wild Ones continues to lead the natural landscaping movement as we explore, teach, and change the practice of gardening in our communities and around the country to using native plants. Wild Ones is a not-for-profit environmental education and advocacy organization.
